2020 Summer Girls’ Camp

In this 4-day long adventure, our camp directors Janet Do and Gloria Garcia-Rodriguez, along with guest instructors, will encourage girls to try new things and help them develop their self-worth, confidence, and leadership skills through a variety activities. Sport and play, self care, community service, visual and performing arts, self defense, and cultural cuisine are some of the components that are included in this experience. Lunch and snacks are included in camp cost. Parent/guardian will need to sign a walking field trip permission slip on first morning of camp.

This camp is recommended for girls in grades 3rd-6th or approximate ages of 7 to 12.

Note: On Thursday, July 2nd, participants and instructors will walk to Montavilla Community Park for a picnic lunch and open swim at the pool.

Janet Do & Gloria Garcia-Rodriguez

Gloria has been mentoring, coaching and inspiring young girls in the inner North and Northeast Portland communities for over 13 years! She has the gift of being able to amplify the voices of the quietest of children and the ability to bring out the best in each and every child she serves. She is an exceptional athlete and shares her passion for volleyball, community, diversity and integrity on and off the court at Metro Courts, Inc.

Janet is a first-grade teacher at Whitman Elementary School and a 2019 recipient of a Milken Educator Award, considered the Oscars of teaching. Janet “is a master at building community and creates a classroom students and families love. Janet forms strong, genuine relationships, helps all students set and reach attainable goals, incorporates brain science and mindfulness techniques, and is quick to advocate for children with special needs.” (milkeneducatorawards.org)

Gloria and Janet met in 2010 while working for Beaumont Middle School’s Sun School Program. Gloria coached volleyball and Janet taught hip-hop dance. They also teamed up and worked together as summer camp counselors. They have remained close friends over the past decade and feel incredibly lucky to be able to work together again.

Both of these amazing women are native Oregonians, first generation Americans, graduates of PPS (Janet – Benson and Gloria – Roosevelt), speak their parents’ native language (Vietnamese and Spanish), and are impacting the lives of youth EVERY SINGLE DAY!!
