Volleyball – Our Instructors

Gloria Garcia
Volleyball Programmer @Metro Courts
Director Metro Volleyball Academy
16U Head Coach

I am a first generation American, born to Mexican immigrants. My four siblings and I all attended Roosevelt High School, where I proudly wore my black and gold playing varsity volleyball, basketball, golf and running track & field. A year after graduating, my high school varsity volleyball coach offered me the JV2 Head Coach position, so I returned to Roosevelt’s gym for another three years. I’ve been coaching recreation and club teams since, along with teaching skills classes and camps at various Portland schools and community centers. I am the Volleyball Programmer at Metro Courts, Inc., Club Director of Metro Volleyball Academy as well as Head Coach for the 16U MVA team.

Shelly Smith
14U Head Coach

Originally from Yreka, CA, I am a small town girl who started playing volleyball in the 7th grade in the fall of 1984… yes, 1984!  In some way, shape or form, I have been affiliated with volleyball as a player and/or coach for over 35 years.  In high school, I played volleyball, basketball, and participated in track, then attended Oregon State University.  I played 4 years as an outside hitter, earning all-conference honors two times (PAC-10 All-Freshman team, PAC-10 All-Conference team).
After college, I continued my volleyball career playing professionally in Sweden, where my team won back-to-back Swedish national championships.  Currently, I compete with my masters team, playing domestically at the USAV Open National Championships each year and internationally at tournaments in Italy (2013) and Portugal (2019).
I have coached high school and club volleyball for the past 20 years.  In addition to coaching, I have been a teacher for over 18 years.
